Saipan’s chances to host the 2006 Micronesian Games got a shot in the arm yesterday when Department of Community and Cultural Affairs secretary Juan L. Babauta presented his case to Speaker Benigno Fitial and members of the legislature and got a favorable response.

According to the secretary, the members were “very supportive” of the idea to bring the games back to Saipan for the first time since 1990, but they requested more information before they are able to make a decision.

“It went very well with the speaker and five to six members of the legislature, they’re interested and excited, however, I need to go back to them and give them more information and details about the cost for housing, transportation, accommodations—it’s all logistics,” said Babauta.

Babauta said that he will report to the legislature before the close of business today, and that the legislature was also happy with the dates proposed by Governor Juan N. Babauta for June 23 through July 7, 2006.

While there is less than a year before all of the track and field events that are normally held during the Games would commence, there is already a race to beat the clock set by Micronesian Games Council for an official “okay” from Saipan to hold the event in the CNMI.

According to Babauta, the Council requires a response by Monday, Aug. 15, but the local delegation will file for a one week extension to allow for the decision makers to follow proper procedure.

“We are going to call the MGC to extend the deadline until Monday, Aug. 22, because the legislature meets Wednesday where they can address my request so a bill or resolution can come out by then,” he said.

In the meantime, the secretary will be meeting with architects and experts today to determine the figures for the improvement package—including technicians from the Department of Public Works.

Of the major renovations, Babauta said that the Oleai Sports Complex will be receiving the most facelifts. The Tan Ge softball field would stand to receive new bleachers that span the length of the fence line while Francisco M. Palacios baseball field would get a grandstand style addition. The diamonds would not be the biggest recipients, however; as the plans discussed include some much needed relief for the island’s swimmers.

“The pool in Marpi needs major repair or we will build a new pool. As you know, our swimmers are awesome and they deserve first class facilities. If it can be built in six to seven months, then we will try to work it out,” said Babauta.

The secretary said that the new digs for the proposed Olympic size pool would be centrally located at the Oleai Sports Complex.
