Close counts at PIC
Though many equate the sharp report of leather-bound balls meeting ash bats or the grunts and groans of gridiron gladiators with the sounds of September, many in San Antonio are in tune with pings and thuds of metal horse Zories, as the 6th Annual PIC Horseshoe Tournament returns.
The title is up for grabs this time around as the defending champion tandem of Dr. Mohammad Ashraf and John Aldrich will be without half of its fire, as Aldrich is in search of a new partner.
Last year duo successfully came into the finals via the loser’s bracket to down local shoe sage Dale Roberts and Yuki Kawimotogawa of Japan, 15-6, 15-11. The runner’s up will be returning, and it would take a team of wild horses to keep last year’s third place finishers Mark MacDonald and Yosh Gabaldon away from the action.
Yoshie Cramer is recovering from a shoulder injury that has kept her off of the pro tour, and veterans like Gary Weakley and Rick Northen are still hunting for the elusive title. Northen is so hungry that he was the first underhanded hurler to sign on for the event.
The 2004 tournament attracted 24 players for the biggest turnout in the history of the event, but organizers are looking to shatter that record by doubling the number of participants.
“Although we had great weather last year, horseshoes is the sport of champions and we are going to play rain or shine,” said tournament coordinator Jon Cramer.
The tournament gets underway on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Pacific Islands Club, and cash prizes await the top three finishers. The teams will be randomly drawn for the double elimination bracket, and the shoes start flying at10am.
Registration for the backyard bonanza is $10 per person and includes a waterpark pass
