It’s time to lace up your walking shoes as the Saipan Walking Association Inc. is just a few days away from hosting the 4th Foundation and Family Day Walk.

This Saturday, Aug. 20, a small army of pedestrians will band together to take steps for health, but where and just how many have changed a bit from last year.

This year’s course will take participants from the shores of Pau Pau Beach in San Roque, to Banzai Cliff and back. If the distance seems to be a bit far, you can still participate as organizers have also planned a shorter course that will turn around near the Korean Memorial at the Last Command Post.

Only 43 walkers participated in last year’s Foundation and Family Day Walk along the Beach Pathway due to foul weather, but organizers expect more participants this time around.

Like all SAIWAI activities, the 4th Annual Foundation and Family Day Walk will be sanctioned by the International Federation of Popular Sports or IVV and members will receive credit for joining the event.

Registration for the event begins at 6am, and the cost to participate is $6. The fee includes a commemorative t-shirt, fruits, and drinks.

“SAIWAI would like to thank all the sponsors and supporters and volunteers for the past 4 years for making possible their health enhancing program for the community,” said event coordinator Mario Espeleta.

To date, the IVV has member-walking clubs in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, the CNMI and 29 other European countries.
SAIWAI was incorporated as a non-profit corporation on July 27, 2001 and was established to promote public health through non-competitive walking.
