Japan Gray takes ‘Peppy Vacation’
Nearly 200 children from Japan and Saipan descended upon the Oleai Sports Complex yesterday with thoughts of food, friends, and fun in the sun as they took part in the second Peppy Vacation in Saipan 2005.
Sixteen teams of 12 spent the better part of the day engaging in activities like Tug-O-War, Bring Me, a basketball relay, and Caterpillar in hopes of medaling in international contest, but the main focus of the event was to bring them all together for a day of fun.
All of the 192 kids between the ages of 5 and 14 donned either the yellow t-shirts of the Japanese team or the local blue, and each of the teams sported matching color-coded head bands to distinguish themselves from their opponents.
“We did this a couple of weeks ago and there were twice as many. The event was organized by the Japan Peppy Club, which operates exchange programs all over Japan, and also SBLI (Saipan Business Language Institute) and the EIC,” said event spokesman Jim Davies.
The kids from Japan Gray struck gold by outscoring the competition with 144 points, but the Saipan Red squad was right behind with 142 points to bag the silver. The bronze went to Japan Red with 113 points, but all of the teams were winners because they were able to have fun and make friends with their counterparts from across the sea.
According to Davies, the group has already discussed returning next year to offer the same fun and frolic to a new generation of faces.
