The Marianas Visitors Authority recently welcomed travel magazine Voyage to the islands. It is the only English travel magazine in Shanghai, China.

One of the magazine’s editors, Guy Longmore, jumped at the opportunity to cover the Marianas—Saipan, Tinian, and Rota—from Aug. 1 to 6, 2005, to spread awareness of the destination to their readers.

“Voyage is a travel magazine focusing on travel in China, Asia and the surrounding Pacific region. Every month, we inspire the discerning traveler with a stimulating range of well-written and photographed features about travel destinations, local arts, food and leisure. We aim to help readers choose their next holiday location or activity,” according to Voyage editorial.

Not only did Longmore cover Saipan, but he was also able to travel to Tinian and Rota. Armed with an itinerary packed with many activities that included sightseeing and tasting local cuisine on all islands, the familiarization tour included a courtesy visit with Gov. Juan N. Babauta.

Voyage magazine circulates 25,000 copies per month that are distributed through retail channels and subscriptions. The magazine’s target segment includes English-speaking foreigners and Chinese living in China. This month’s coverage will include a six-page feature story introducing Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to the Asia-based readers with an estimated ad value of $27,720. The Marianas feature will be released in the October issue.

“Saipan is for package holidaymakers—a one-size-fits-all destination. In terms of modern history, Tinian is a colossus. And Rota stands alone. As a budding eco-tourist destination it most closely matches the vision of a modern island paradise—a place of unspoiled beauty and sympathetic development,” commented Longmore.

The following MVA members contributed to the success of the familiarization visit: Marianas Public Lands Authority, Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach, Tasi Tours & Transportation, Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, Saipan Sea Ventures, and Rota Resort & Country Club.

China continues to awe destinations, with outbound travel numbers reaching 29 million in 2004. (PR)
