NMIFA evaluation next Saturday
The Northern Mariana Islands Football (Soccer) Association will hold an evaluation next Saturday for all players who will compete in the upcoming 2005 season.
NMIFA secretary general Peter Coleman said during a recent interview that some 250 players will take part in the evaluation, which begins at 4:30pm at the American Memorial Park.
“All the players will come down and do the evaluation, like a draft,” he said. “All the coaches will be here and will look at each player going through a number of drills. The coaches will take some notes and after, will convene and we’ll figure out what person is going to be on which team.”
Coleman said that players will be notified about the rosters of the teams a week later. Shortly after, Coleman said the action will begin as the 2005 season will get underway.
According to Coleman, the number of players increased last week as another 50 youngsters showed interest in developing their skills on the soccer pitch, and having fun while doing so.
NMIFA hosted a players and coaches introductory clinic over the past weekend. A total of 250 kids and over 20 parents took part in the clinic, which was conducted by professional coach and current Guam National team coach Norio Tsukitate, as well as former players and veteran coaches Frank Camacho, Hiroshi Katsumata, and Tino San Gil of the Guam Football Association.
“The guys from Guam have been excellent,” Coleman said. “It was better than we anticipated. We signed up additional players in the last two days alone, bringing our grand total to about 250, which eclipses last year’s CYSO by more than 100 players.”
Coleman stressed that with the increase in number of players, NMIFA is in need of volunteer coaches.
Practices are held on Tuesday afternoon’s at 4:30 pm in the AMP, and the highly anticipated games will be held on Saturday afternoons at 4:30 pm at the same location.
