The Department of Public Health and the CNMI Diabetes Prevention and Control Program inaugurated a new resource center for diabetes on Navy Hill yesterday.

Program manager Lynn Tenorio led the ceremony that was graced by Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Public Health Secretary James U. Hofschneider.

Tenorio said the new office would be the central location for diabetes prevention education and information on how to manage the illness.

“It will also assist in identifying and connecting people with diabetes with other public agencies, community organizations and providers to further enhance diabetes care and management,” she said.

The resource center will also present fun and interactive learning opportunities to the community. Tenorio said they would conduct cooking classes and several presentations at the center.

She said the construction of the center is in step with the Division of Public Health’s mission to develop a healthy community by promoting health and disease prevention, to continuously improve the health knowledge of the community members, and to foster teamwork among providers to give quality service to the community.

The resource center also intends to raise the level of awareness on diabetes prevention and care and reducing the burden of diabetes complications in the CNMI.

Marianas Visitors Authority director Vicky Benavente, American Red Cross NMI Chapter executive director John Hirsh, Committee on Diabetes Coalition chair Robert Torres, Ayuda Network’s Conrad Reyes, DPH deputy secretary Pete Untalan, former Health Secretary Joe Villagomez, and Guam Diabetes Association’s Karl Butler and Winnie Butler attended the opening ceremony.

Also in attendance during the event were representatives from the Bangladesh Society, Women’s Affairs Office, Community Guidance Center, Education Research Center, Saipan Lau Lau, Commonwealth Health Center Volunteers and Tobacco Prevention Program office.
