Rangers, Charlie Cat, SGA are week’s best
The Ford Rangers, the crew of the Charlie Cat, and players of the Saipan Golfers Association shone the brightest this past week in sports.
The Rangers took out years of frustration by beating pennant champions Northern Yankees to capture the 2005 Saipan Major League championship over the weekend.
The former Pirates won three straight games in the best-of-five title series after losing the opener and capped their campaign with a 7-4 win Sunday at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
The crew of the Charlie Cat, meanwhile, repeated as the grand prize champion of the 21st Saipan International Fishing Tournament held over the weekend in the waters off Saipan.
Quang Ly, Jesus Cura, and Nguyen Hoa reeled in the mightiest of catches—a monster 422.40-lb. marlin Sunday to eclipse first day leader Mari and boat owner Lawrence Concepcion.
SGA, for its part, out dueled Fil-Taga Golfers Association to take home the perpetual cup of the inaugural SGA-Fil-Taga Cup competition held these past two Sundays at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort and Kingfisher Golf Links.
Also winning individual awards were Sasaki Oliver (Championship Flight), Ray San Nicolas (A Flight), Sen. Pete Reyes (B Flight), Mike Cruz (C Flight), and Frances Sablan (Ladies Flight).
In bowling, Richard Leong and Sophie Fejeran were crowned September Pepsi King and Queen of the Lanes after their outstanding performances Sunday and Monday at the Capital Bowling Center.
On Wednesday, athletes that represented the CNMI in the 2005 Palau South Pacific Mini Games received medals of participation from chef de mission Michael White during a recognition banquet held in their honor at the Saipan Grand Hotel.
There was also a bevy of basketball competition last week, as action in the Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League, MDX Amateur Radio Club Inter-Color Basketball League, and Budweiser Cup returned at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
