Oliver, De Torres take Autumn nods
Sasaki Oliver and Greg De Torres outplayed the competition at the Kingfisher Golf Links to take the Fil-Taga Ace of the Month for September in the A Flight and B Flight, respectively.
There were a couple of differences between the duffers on Sunday, Sept. 11, including that Oliver didn’t need his handicap to edge the field as he tallied the lowest gross score of the day with a two-under 70.
Another was that the top dog from the 2005 Tournament of Champions didn’t actually win out over all of his competitors, as Pete Reyes was seven strokes off the pace with a gross score of 77 until his 11-handicap topped Oliver with a net score of 66.
Were it not for Reyes’ previous nod in January, Oliver would have taken the runner-up, but that is one of the reasons for the popularity of the local golfers association.
The B Flight proved to be a bit more interesting as Torres topped three competitors with better gross scores for the monthly laurel thanks in large part to his 31 handicap. After finishing a round on the links slightly under three digits, Torres’ 97 was adjusted to an ace-winning 66.
Torres also got some help in the form of a scorecard tiebreaker to edge Henry Bautista, whose 20-handicap adjusted his 86 gross score to an evenly matched 66 net. Were it not for third biggest handicap in the tournament, Torres would have fallen prey to a number of his fellow strikers and slicers.
Established in 1993, Fil-Taga’s tournaments operate under a computer-controlled handicap system that creates parity among players in the A and B Flights.
A Fil-Taga Ace of the Month champion is crowned monthly. Regular tournaments are scheduled once a month, normally every third Sunday. Green fees are in the $35 to $40 price range for most tournaments.
