The Attorney General’s Office yesterday disclosed that it would conduct a qualifying examination for those who want to become approved representatives under the CNMI Refugee Protection Program.

Approved representatives may assist clients at all stages of the refugee protection process, explained assistant attorney general Ian Catlett, the CNMI’s immigration enforcement attorney.

“This includes helping foreign nationals who fear return to their country of origin and qualify for protection under the United Nations Convention and Protocol on the Status of Refugees and the United Nations Convention against Torture,” Catlett said. “Under CNMI law, representatives are entitled to charge a reasonable fee for their services.”

Catlett said in a telephone interview that both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens could be qualified to take the exam, adding that the AGO wants to extend the opportunity of becoming an approved representative to non-lawyers.

For non-U.S. citizens, Catlett advised them to call his office at 664-2366 to know if they would be qualified to take the exam.

The AGO urged interested applicants to call Ellen Whalen at 664-2378 to register for the exam on or before Oct. 12, 2005. The written exam will be held at the CNMI Superior Court’s conference room on Oct. 19 from 9am to 12pm.
