Kids get hooked in derby
A month after some of the top anglers from across the region reeled in monster marlins, whopping wahoos, magnificent mahi mahis, and tremendous tunas during the Saipan Fisherman’s Association 21st Annual International Fishing Tournament, some of the youngest are a week away from following in their fathers and unlces’ footsteps.
After a month-long delay due to weather and poor sea conditions, the next generation of fishermen will fix their bait and cast their lines in the 7th Annual International Children’s Fishing Derby on Sunday, Oct. 9.
The mini-baiters will begin the hunt for the bottom fish outside of the reef behind Managaha Island from 1:30pm to 4:30pm, and will win prizes based on the junior angler with the most fish, the longest fish, and the biggest variety of gill friends. Check-in time is 12:15pm at the Seaplane Ramp located behind the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. power plant in Lower Base.
First-timers are welcome as the contest is open to children between the ages of 7 to 12 years of age, but the time to register is now as only 22 participants will be able to vie for the title.
