National GOP gives training to local party
The National Republican Committee held yesterday a two-hour video conference training for the local Republican Party members, according to its chair, John S. Reyes.
He said the training, which featured a PowerPoint presentation by RNC political director Gary Evans, focused on election strategies and election-related preparations.
The video conference was held at Saipan World Resort at about 10am.
Reyes said most Republican Party candidates, including Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente, attended the seminar.
Further, Reyes said that some off-island GOP members attended a similar training in Honolulu last weekend.
He said this training is the first time that they had one from the RNC and is due to the CNMI Republican Party being now a recognized member of the national party.
“This is a benefit of NMI being a member of RNC. They’re providing technical assistance. There’s a lot of benefits for being a member,” said Reyes.
He noted that the Republican Governors Association has recently endorsed the NMI GOP candidates.
He said the local party has not requested for financial assistance “because we’re pretty new.”
The local GOP received its national recognition late last year.
“RNC has always been willing to support its members,” he said.
He said NMI GOP hopes that GOP Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle would be able to come to Saipan to personally endorse GOP candidates led by Gov. Juan N. Babauta, who is seeking re-election with Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente.
“It’s not certain yet but we hope that it can be arranged,” he said.
Republican Guam Gov. Felix Camacho is expected to join the last local GOP political campaign before the Nov. 5 election.
Earlier, Lt. Gov. Kaleo Moylan attended the GOP’s political rally at Garapan Central Park.
Local GOP leaders see the NMI’s membership with RNC as a big boost to the local party’s electoral bid.
