The Filipiniana Section, the newest section at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, is now open for schoolchildren and members of the CNMI community who want to learn more about the Philippines and its culture.

Public library director Kevin Latham led the opening of the new section yesterday afternoon. He said the library acquired more than 100 books about the Philippines including: Philippine National Bibliography, Mga Gunita ng Himagsikan, Philippine Christmas Art and Form, Culture and Terrorism: A Round Table Discussion, and Great Churches in the Philippines among many others.

Latham said the project would not have been realized without the help of the Philippine Consulate General and the Tan Holdings Foundation. He said the books were acquired through the assistance of Philippine Consul General Wilfredo Maximo, who himself said that the books were acquired both from the Philippine National Library and Philippine National Bookstore.

The public library director handed out plaques of appreciation to Maximo for the “wonderful and generous” assistance in helping the public library build the new section. Latham also gave a plaque of appreciation to Tan Holdings Foundation representative Lynn Knight. Knight said the foundation helped out in the shipment of the Filipiniana books to the Commonwealth.

The new section, said Latham, would hopefully start a substantial collection of books for the Filipino community. He said the library is open to more donations of books related to the new section. (Marconi Calindas)
