Counselors to learn from each other in institute
A counselor’s institute that is expected to draw more than 25 school counselors and private counselors will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Aqua Resort Club from 7:30am to 4: 30pm.
WSR Elementary School counselor and steering committee member Rebecca Flores said the training would focus on the strategies, skills, knowledge and roles of a school counselor. She said several counselors from different institutions will be presenting the knowledge and strategies they have learned from off-island training to encourage and empower the local counselors.
Counselors from Rota and Tinian, along with local institutes such as the Community Guidance Center, will be presenting and sharing their knowledge with the rest of the CNMI counselors.
Public School System Behavioral Management specialist Steve Nguyen said this event will be the first ever institute in the CNMI where counselors would gather to share information and strategies.
“Counselors have good hearts to help kids, but they lack training in certain areas,” he said, adding that counselors also need the support of their school administrators so they could effectively practice their roles as counselors and not as disciplinarians. Flores said some counselors are doing administrative work and are not fully doing their counseling job, which should be changed.
Other counselors and officials participating in the training include PSS official Frank Rabauliman, Hopwood Junior High School counselor and member of steering committee Patty Mendoza, Saipan Southern High School counselor Cecilia Labausa, representatives from the HIV Leadership Team, Marianas High School counselors Hazel Tudela and Grace Sablan, Esco Iguel of OICC, Sister Stella of the Community Guidance Center, WSR principal Alfred Ada, and Percy Torres of the Community Guidance Center.
