Registered voters surpasses 15K mark
The number of voters registered to vote in the Nov. 5 general election has surpassed the 15,000 mark, according to latest data from the Commonwealth Election Commission.
As of Oct. 14, 2005, there were 15,120 voters who had signed up to participate in the coming polls.
CEC executive director Gregorio Sablan said earlier that this year’s turnout was “the most we’ve had registered in the Northern Marianas.”
He had noted that there were about as many registered voters four years ago, but the 2001 figure included voters who failed to cast their ballot in 1999. “The new law requires us to remove the names of those who failed to vote in the 2001 and 2003 elections. Despite this, the number of voters climbed,” Sablan said.
Election District 1 posted the most number of voters, with 6,124 registrants. San Antonio has 813; San Vicente 2,111; Koblerville 1,019; Kagman 1,170; and the Northern Marianas College 1,011.
Election District 2, which includes the villages of Chalan Kanoa and Susupe, has 954 registered voters.
Candidates will have to woo 3,038 voters in Election District 3, including 938 from Oleai, 1996 from Garapan, and 104 from the Northern Islands.
A total of 2,260 voters registered to vote in Election District 4, including 618 from Tanapag, 505 from San Roque, and 1,137 from Capitol Hill.
Tinian, or Election District 5, has 1,213 voters, while Rota or Election District 6 has 1,531 voters.
A total of 42 positions are up for grabs in the November elections.
These include governor and lieutenant governor, resident representative to the United States, and two Senate seats for each of the three senatorial districts.
For the House of Representatives, there are six positions available in ED1, two in ED2, six in ED3, two in ED4, and one each in ED5 and ED6.
Voters will also elect a mayor for each of the four municipalities, three Municipal Council members for each of the three senatorial districts, and one Board of Education member each for Saipan and Tinian.
The ballot will also bear questions on the retention of Chief Justice Miguel Sablan Demapan, Associate Justice Alexandro Cruz Castro, and Associate Judge David Arthur Wiseman, as well as the Constitutional Convention Question.
