Verizon, Proa clash for MBL title
The wait is finally over as Heinz and Dave Proa and Verizon clash tomorrow evening at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium in the much-anticipated championship game of the 2005 Masters Basketball League 35-and-over division.
Proa enters the game with a twice-to-beat advantage after finishing the double-elimination playoffs with a perfect record.
The team, however, might be without the services of scoring phenomenon Tony Diaz, who sat out Proa’s previous bout due to an injury, and playmaker Rick Alegre, who took a vacation in the Philippines.
But Proa is still a team to contend with especially with the presence of speedy guard Robert Tamondong and deadly shooters Rufino Aguon and Gilbert Espinosa.
Verizon, meanwhile, comes into the game fresh from its dethroning of Old Aces last Oct. 15 and eliminating powerhouse Pepsi last Saturday behind the steady play of Ed Cosino, Nomar Gamboa, Frank Iglecias, and Elmer Pineda.
The team must win tomorrow to keep their title hopes alive.
If Verizon comes through, a do-or-die finale will be played at 11am on Sunday.
A win by Proa automatically earns them the coveted crown. (Shan Seman)
