A man landed in jail after allegedly burglarizing the apartment of his former girlfriend.

Police charged 37-year-old Norris Osiik Omengkar with burglary, disturbing the peace, and criminal mischief.

In a bail hearing yesterday, Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert Naraja imposed a $1,500 bail on Omengkar and ordered the defendant to stay away from Eulalia J. Rashid by at least 100 yards. The judge ordered Omengkar not to leave Saipan.

In an affidavit submitted to the court, police detective Andrea Ozawa said the victim arrived at her Garapan apartment early Thursday last week and was just about to go to sleep when she heard a continuous banging on the door. Police said the door sustained damage.

Later, Ozawa said Omengkar began banging on a second door and forcibly entered the apartment of the victim, who was in her sleepwear. The woman jumped from her bed and punched Omengkar in the nose, causing it to bleed. The woman demanded that Omengkar leave the premises or she would call the police.

Ozawa said Omengkar refused to leave, prompting the woman to leave the apartment and ask her neighbors for help. Police responded to the scene and saw Omengkar walking away from the scene. When interviewed by policemen, Omengkar referred to the woman as her girlfriend.

The woman admitted that she and Omengkar were previously involved in a romantic relationship, but that the relationship was past, because she is now married to another man. Police then arrested Omengkar and brought him to the Division of Corrections. (John Ravelo)
