The CNMI and Guam have joined efforts in contracting a consulting firm that would look into ways of enhancing the Marianas as a tourist destination.

Commonwealth Ports Authority executive director Carlos H. Salas disclosed yesterday that his office and the Marianas Visitors Authority have teamed up with their Guam counterparts in contracting ASM company.

Salas said the $40,000-cost of the study would be shared among the CPA, MVA, the Guam Visitors Bureau, and the Guam International Airport.

“[The consulting firm has been] studying how to enhance existing routes and develop new routes,” Salas said.

Results of the study, which was recommended by the Pacific Asia Travel Association, would be released sometime in December, according to Salas.

The recent pullout of Japan Airlines’ regular flights to Saipan impacted the number of Japanese tourists visiting the CNMI. Japan, however, remains the CNMI’s top tourism market.

Despite the pullout of regular flights, though, JAL has been providing charter flights to Saipan.
