Three persons were killed while one was seriously injured in a vehicular accident along Beach Road in Chalan Laulau on early morning Sunday.

Acting Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David said the fatalities—two men and a woman—suffered severe injuries to the head and body and were pronounced dead on that same day at the Commonwealth Health Center.

David said the fatalities, all Chinese workers aged 26 and 27, were on board a white 1997 four-door Honda Civic sedan.

The DPS spokesman said the identities of the three will not be released to the media until their next of kin have been notified.

Injured was 66-year-old Jose C. Tudela, a resident of San Jose. He sustained a broken collarbone and was admitted at CHC for further treatment, according to David.

Tudela was the driver of a black Toyota Tacoma 4X4 truck.

David said traffic investigators determined that speed was the factor of the accident and not alcohol.

David said an unidentified woman called DPS on Sunday at 2:10am. about an auto accident along Beach Road by the B&R Auto Shop intersection.

Officers from the DPS Traffic Investigation Unit learned that Tudela was operating his truck on north direction when he saw the white sedan traveling on the opposite lane.

The white car operated by the 26-year-old man suddenly veered onto the north-bound lane and collided with Tudela’s truck.

Immediately after the accident, police, traffic officers, and fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene and transported all the occupants in both vehicles to CHC.

David said both vehicles had extensive damage to the front portion.

David said the operator of the white car violated a Commonwealth Code that states that “it is unlawful to operate any vehicle or bicycle upon any highway which has been divided into two or more lanes by means of intermittent barriers.”

The three Chinese were the 11th, 12th and 13th vehicular accident fatalities in the CNMI so far this year. In all those 13, six were alcohol-related victims, police said.
