Live vintage bombs set for detonation in Marpi
Members of the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team from Guam will detonate World War II live bombs at Laderan Laggun Cliff Line on Saipan on Saturday, Dec 3, the Emergency Management Office announced yesterday.
The EMO and the Department of Public Safety will join the Navy disposal unit in the detonation operation between 1pm to 2pm at the Laderan Cliff Line which is located a mile north of Marpi Landfill.
EMO stated in its advisory that due to the danger imposed by this operation, Gov. Juan N. Babauta is advising the public—especially commercial pilots, tour operators, residents, farmers, tourists, bikers, joggers, and fishermen—to stay at least a mile way from this area during this time.
The Marpi area will be closed off from 11:30am to 2:30pm, and the only area that will not be closed off will be Suicide Cliff, which will be the main viewing point for the detonation.
Public access is permitted only at the road leading up the Far-East Broadcasting antenna into Suicide Cliff for viewing purposes.
DPS will be setting up security posts to enforce and control traffic movement for safety purposes.
EMO did not indicate how many live bombs will be detonated during the operation.
