Maximo Ronquillo Jr. conducted the Guam Territorial Band Friday morning to the great delight of students at the San Vicente Elementary School.

Before a sea of yellow-shirted Canaries, the Guam Band of High School and College Students, and volunteer adults, began with a medley of popular Disney tunes.

The Band was on island for the Mount Carmel Theatre’s Club production of the musical “Anastasia,” performed at the World Resort Diamond Hall Dec. 1-3, 2005.

Mount Carmel School principal Galvin de leon Guerrero brought the band to SVES. Previously, a jazz band from Guam was well received at SVES that de leon Guerrero was encouraged to offer again the visiting band’s performance to the student population. The Mt. Carmel principal was also the guest speaker in SVES’ Farewell and Recognition Ceremony for 6th Grades last June.

Nicollette Lopez of Mt. Carmel, who plays the role of the adult Anastasia in the musical, was also on hand to render a number.

Ronquillo’s deft conducting was equaled by a sensitive touch to public relations and pedagogy. When he introduced the members of the band and their respective instruments, he encouraged the students to seek out and try out any of the instruments for their own musical edification. The alto saxophone and the trumpets got the wildest cheers.

Playing popular Christmas songs and inviting the audience to sing along got everyone into a peppy holiday mood.

The band’s rendition of the “Harry Potter” theme was the day’s coup d’ grace and was greeted with universal recognition and acclaim.

SVES administrators, principal Janet Villagomez, and vice principal James Rayphand were effusive in their welcome and profusive in their gratitude to de leon Guerrero and the members of the band.
