Appointed officials holding key positions in government should resign now, rather than wait for the incoming administration to ask them to, the Office of the Governor-Elect said yesterday.

According to transition committee chairman Martin Manglona, appointees of the outgoing Babauta administration should be courteous enough to give way to the Fitial government.

“All officials in key position should tender their courtesy resignations before the new administration comes in, so the next governor and lieutenant governor could have the chance to select their own people. It’s common sense to do this; they should not wait to be asked,” Manglona said.

Governor-elect Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov.-elect Timothy P. Villagomez will assume office on Jan. 9, 2006.

Manglona said, however, that the incoming administration has not yet drawn up a final list of appointees. The result of the transition committee’s assessment will be a major factor in deciding who will be designated to each government agency.

“We want to see the problem, so we can look for the individual that could do the job. We will put only the best qualified people; we won’t put incompetent ones just to return political favors,” he said.

According to Manglona, the new administration’s criteria for choosing its appointees will be integrity, competency, resourcefulness, and loyalty to the incoming leadership.

“We’re not going to put people with a tarnished record. Resourcefulness is also important because the government doesn’t have too much asset; we have to make do with what we have,” he added.

Furthermore, Manglona said the Covenant Party would be willing to retain some of the current administration’s appointees, if it failed to find competent people within its camp. “We will reach across,” he said.
