PSS seeks understanding from Transition Committee
The Public School System has requested the Transition Committee of Gov.-elect Benigno Fitial and Lt. Gov.-elect Timothy Villagomez to excuse some its staff from attending committee meetings during school hours.
PSS associate commissioner for administrative services David M. Borja said much as his office would want to cooperate with preparations being done for the takeover of the next administration, he had asked the committee to excuse its teachers, counselors, and teacher aides that are part of the committee in functions during school hours.
He said some PSS employees have already filed for administrative leave until Dec. 30, but he said he still has to review some of the requests for leave.
Borja said he is seeking the committee’s understanding that PSS could not allow staff who are “directly working with the students” to leave their duties during school hours.
He told the committee his office is not prohibiting the members to participate in the transition process. The PSS employees could in fact attend the Transition Committee functions, but only after school hours.
The associate commissioner also clarified that only staff that are not part of federally funded programs could apply for administrative leave. PSS employees that are working in programs funded by the federal government can only apply for annual leave, he said.
“Again, this is for those who are not working directly with children,” he reiterated.
Borja said as far as he could recall, there are only a few teachers that are included in the transition committee and majority of the affected PSS employees are either under administration or management.
