CUC’s Loraine Babauta retires
Commonwealth Utilities Corporation executive director Lorraine A. Babauta retired effective yesterday, Dec. 9.
The deputy executive director, Bernard Villagomez, will take over the post in an acting capacity but only for a week.
Villagomez said yesterday that he had tendered his resignation and it would become effective on Dec. 31, 2005. However, Villagomez will go on leave starting Dec. 17.
In a memorandum, Gov. Juan N. Babauta designated CUC chief financial officer Sohale Samari as acting executive director from Dec. 17 until a permanent executive director is appointed.
“Please extend your full cooperation and assistance to the acting executive director(s) during their respective tenure as they assume additional responsibilities,” the governor told CUC deputy directors on Rota and Tinian, as well as all division managers and supervisors.
Lorraine Babauta’s retirement caps a 12-year career at the utility firm. She joined CUC as a water laboratory supervisor and eventually became wastewater division chief. She was appointed to head the cash-strapped agency three years ago.
For his part, Villagomez served CUC for three years as deputy executive director.
He said he decided to resign because “it’s the noble thing to do.”
The incoming administration had called for the resignation of top government officials in the Babauta administration.
Villagomez expressed a plan to work in the private sector after he leaves CUC.
