A peaceful New Year celebration
Just like the Christmas celebration, it was another peaceful New Year’s Eve on Saipan, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Acting DPS spokesman Eric David said in a telephone interview with the Saipan Tribune yesterday that the New Year celebrations went smoothly, as no fatalities or major road accidents occurred on Dec. 31 until Jan. 1.
David said there were a lot of firecrackers and fireworks on the island during the two days. Fortunately, no fire or casualty was reported related to firecrackers or fireworks, he added.
With respect to injuries caused by firecrackers or fireworks, David said he has to check first with the Commonwealth Health Center if there were any person injured.
As for persons arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, the spokesman said he has not looked at the DPS tally.
Some San Roque residents reported of hearing guns being fired between 1am to 2am, but this has yet to be confirmed by police.
DPS earlier warned that anybody caught firing guns during New Year’s Eve celebrations would be arrested and charged accordingly.
DPS also earlier advised the public that parents or adults should supervise children who would explode firecrackers or light fireworks during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
