Fitial issues first weather, marine advisory

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial issued yesterday his first weather and marine advisory for the people of the Commonwealth.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial issued yesterday his first weather and marine advisory for the people of the Commonwealth.

Fitial, through the Emergency Management Office, informed the public that the high pressure that has been building north of the region would bring increasing winds to the Marianas.

The winds, combined with a long-period north to northeast swell, will result in rough seas the rest of the week, the governor said.

The governor advised fishermen, beachgoers, divers, swimmers, and marine tour operators on Saipan, Tinian and Rota to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches for the next few days.

In his marine advisory, Fitial said a long-period north swell and a long-period east swell would combine to bring hazardous surf to the Mariana islands yesterday and Thursday.

A more significant swell from the northeast is due to arrive tomorrow and persist though the weekend, the chief executive said.
