Considering that nights are by nature cloaked in darkness, have you ever seen the beauty of Saipan at night? If not, drop by the Beans Coffee Shop in Susupe and San Jose for an exhibit of photographs featuring nocturnal Saipan.

Hideo Honda, a native of Tokyo, Japan, is currently exhibiting some of his photos at the coffee establishment. Twelve of the 33-year-olds works are displayed on the walls of the shop.

Honda, a two-year freelance photographer on the island, said that what he tried to achieve in his photographs is to capture the beauty of the island at night, a time that most people usually don’t appreciate because what they only see is the darkness.

He said that when people see his photos, they might think the pictures were shot in the morning “but that’s actually in the evening.” The professional photographer relied only on the light of the moon during his photo sessions.

The photographer also showed Saipan Tribune his pictures of stars, which he captured using a digital single lens reflex camera. The stars appeared to be blots on the photos, but Honda said those were actually stars moving. He said he took the photos at around 2am and 3am last month.

The Japanese photographer said he chose this particular subject for the exhibit because it covers a very wide genre. He said he doesn’t have a favorite subject and takes photos of everything. “I like many kinds of genre.”

Honda places his photographs on transparent plastic frames he bought in Japan. The photos are for sale but he has yet to determine the prices. He said those who want to buy his photos could just ask the store for prices.

Honda is a member of a Japanese professional photographers club called “Macarone” for 12 years now.

Manager Kyung Min Song said Beans Coffee Shop has become the latest haven for artists on Saipan because the management is always open to displaying their masterpieces.
