The Kagman Lancheros shocked the sages of softball as they edged the Proa, 7-5, to reach the .500 mark in continuing action of the Men’s Island-Wide Fast-Pitch Softball League Monday night under the lights of Tan Ge Field at the Oleai Sports Complex.

Shortstop Ray Dela Cruz was a hitting machine for the Lancheros at the plate, as the spry swinger went 3-for-4 with two triples, a single, and three ribbies, but the homesteaders got plenty of help from the likes of B.J. Camacho, who went 2-for-4 with a single, a double, and a run batted in.

The centerfielder was on the ball, but second baseman J. D. Dikito came up with a timely hit that put his team in position to win the game. Dikito finished the game 1-for-2 with a single and the game winning score and also made some terrific plays on the defensive side of the ball.

After trailing 4-3 through two complete, the Lancheros scored a pair of runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good, Dela Cruz’s RBI triple drove in the youngster Dikito for the eventual game winner in the top of the fourth.

The crew from Kagman held on the rest of the way to improve to 3-3 on the season while the all-star laden Proa fell to 2-5. Their record is not an accurate indicator of their ability, but if they don’t act fast, the Proa could find themselves looking at the playoff picture from the outside.

Islanders 19,
Seabees ‘4’ 10

The Islanders pulled off a major coup on Monday night as they delivered a beat down to the mighty Seabees ‘4’ with a 19-10 stunner under the lights at Tan Ge Field with an unprecedented display of power at the plate.

The Islanders had plenty of offense to go around as they spread 27 hits over the course of their seven-inning affair—including a monster shot by the former lieutenant governor that left the yard.

With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Diego “Bombs Away” Benavente uncorked a longball that cleared the leftfield fence for the first grand slam of the season. The lieutenant catcher finished the night 2-for-4 with an additional single and six runs batted in, but the Islanders had more weapons in their arsenal as Dennis Ngeskebei went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four singles, a triple, and two runs batted in.

The hit parade continued as Dave Kapileo went 4-for-5 with a pair of singles, a double, a triple and an RBI, while ageless shortstop Reno Celis went 4-for-5 with three singles and left the yard with a three runs shot in the top of the third.

After trailing 4-0 through one and a half innings, the Seabees ‘4’ answered with four runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. The Islanders rebounded in the top of the third by scoring nine runs off of eight hits to wrest control of the game for good.

The Seabees came to within three runs of the Islanders thanks to a six-run fourth, but the underdogs piled on five more in the top of the fifth to end all hopes of a rally.

The win put the Islanders in better standing at 3-5, while the Seabees ‘4’ fell slipped from first to second at 4-2.
