Aside from all of the underhanded action taking place in the both the men’s and women’s island-wide leagues, the Saipan Softball Association has plenty on its plate with only a handful of months remaining before the 2006 Micronesian Games.

According to SSA president Ray Palacios, the current slate of games and the following playoffs should come to a close by the end of next month—leaving plenty of time for the CNMI’s top ballers to prepare for the rest of Micronesia.

“We should be finished (with the men’s and women’s leagues) by the end of February and should be able to select the all-stars by March so we can start practice as soon as possible,” he said.

Once the champions of the leagues are crowned, the only softball that will be played upon the haunts of Tan Ge Field will be practice as the SSA will hold off the next season until after the CNMI is through challenging the region.

“We won’t get started again until after the Micro Games—sometime around the end of July or beginning of August with the Business League and possibly a women’s fast-pitch league as well,” said Palacios.

Before any of the all-stars get named to their respective rosters, they will need to have a skipper to choose them from the talent pool. Palacios said that will be taken care of soon as he is calling for all managers and coaches to meet next week in the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The women’s league will sent its delegates to the coaches and managers meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 31, while the men get their turn the following day on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Both meetings take place at 5:30pm.
