The Santa Rosa II D-9ers extended their lead over the Seabees ‘4’ on Friday night as they improved their record to 6-2 after downing the Islanders 8-5 under the lights of Tan Ge Softball Field at the Oleai Softball Complex.

Pitcher Jess Peterson was a force from the stripe as he allowed just five runs off of seven hits and fanned eight would be hitters to pick up a complete game win, while teammate Dante Sablan provided plenty of punch from the plate.

The slugging shortstop went 2-for-2 with an RBI single and an inside the park grand slam that accounted for the game’s winning runs in the fifth inning when he drove in pinch runner Randy Sablan, Paul Camacho, and Clifton Silil.

Sablan finished the game with five runs batted in overall, while Camacho went 2-for-3 with a single, a triple, and an RBI, and Silil went 2-for-3 with a pair of base hits and put his base running skills to work with a stolen bag.

First baseman Tony Camacho also had a good night at the ball park as he went 1-for-2 with a triple and a plate crossing, while Peterson’s pitching kept the Islanders’ bats at bay.

The D-9ers opened up the game on a mission by taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Peterson’s mix of speed and placement blanked the Islanders until Mel Tenorio doubled in Leo Bobai in the top of the third inning, and the D-9ers answered with another four runs when Sablan circled the bases in the fifth to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

The Islanders threatened as they scored a pair in the sixth and seventh to draw to within three runs of the first place D-9ers, but that’s as close as they would get.

The win gave the D-9ers a two-game advantage over the idle Seabees ‘4’ (4-2) whose scheduled game with the Kagman Lancheros was postponed to a date following the completion of the regular season after both teams agreed to stay their play for another day.

The action of the Saipan Softball Association’s Men’s Fast-Pitch Softball League continued yesterday at 6:30pm at Tan Ge Field.
