Tenorio resigns from Commerce post
Newly appointed Commerce Secretary Clarence Tenorio, Jr. resigned from the Fitial Cabinet Friday, after holding the department’s top executive post for only two weeks.
Gov. Benigno Fitial immediately designated the department’s economist, James A. Santos, as the new acting Commerce secretary.
Tenorio, who holds many hats in the family-owned Joeten supermarkets, including the position of vice president, said he resigned due to “personal reasons” and the need to attend to the private firm, but vowed to continue supporting the new administration.
“Even though I’m leaving [the Cabinet], I’m still 100 percent behind this administration—full support,” Tenorio said via telephone yesterday afternoon.
Fitial’s press secretary, Charles Reyes Jr., said Tenorio’s resignation last Friday came as a surprise to the administration, but the governor respected the decision.
“It is a disappointment to us. We respect Clarence and we believe he is highly competent and ethical,” Reyes said. “We have high confidence in his abilities.”
Tenorio, who had served as Armor platoon leader for the U.S. military, is also head buyer and head security of J.C. Tenorio Enterprises, Inc.
