Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has created another office for individuals with disabilities.

The Office on Disability Policy and Programs was established under the Office of the Governor.

Fitial appointed former CNMI Council on Developmental Disabilities executive director Thomas J. Camacho to head the new office as the governor’s special assistant for disability policy and programs.

“The mission of this office shall be to provide a CNMI-wide leadership by developing and influencing disability-related public policy for the benefit of all CNMI residents with disabilities,” the governor said in a memorandum issued Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.

He added that Camacho would be providing technical assistance concerning the American Disabilities Act for the CNMI in close cooperation with the Governor’s Office and all relevant agencies, programs and organizations.

Government agencies currently serving people with disabilities include the Council on Developmental Disabilities, Office on Vocational Rehabilitation, and the CNMI Center for Independent Living,

Non-profit organizations catering to the needs of CNMI residents who have disabilities include the Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems and the CNMI Association of Families with Disabilities.

In other news, Fitial reiterated on Monday his administration’s dress code.

He reminded all department and activity heads that all Cabinet members and department heads are required to wear professional attire throughout the workweek.

Secretaries and directors should wear formal business attire Mondays through Thursdays, and appropriate island attire on Fridays.

Fitial said the dress code was “intended to project a positive image of the CNMI to our visitors and investors, as well as to instill a sense of professionalism within our administration.”
