February is Parent Leadership Month
Today marks the start of the “Parent Leadership Month” that would focus on parents’ leadership as an essential and effective means of strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect at home.
Acting Gov. Tim Villagomez led the proclamation signing at the Governor’s Office yesterday morning, together with Department of Community and Cultural Affairs acting Secretary Daisy Bier.
Villagomez commended the department and its attached agency, Division of Youth Services, for its efforts in strengthening local families, “particularly in this period of economic difficulty.” He said the success and strength of local families depend largely on successful parenting.
“We should all appreciate the vital role of parents in shaping the character of the children they raise, which has grave implications for the destiny of our communities,” Villagomez said, adding that he himself appreciates the role of parents in instilling a sense of financial and moral responsibility in their children, which has tremendous impact on local communities and the whole nation.
Bier said that, as parents in today’s society, “we are faced with more issues and challenges than those confronted by our parents.” She said what is constant today is the importance of the roles of parents in raising children.
The DCCA secretary urged all parents to stand up and be role models for their children. She said the CNMI needs parents who attend PTA meetings in schools, who coach a sports team, who teach their children to be respectful and take care of the environment, and those who would join hands with the department through DYS and other divisions in making the islands the place where their children could grow up happy, healthy and safe.
The acting governor is inviting parents to participate in the upcoming Family Fun Day on Feb. 18 at the Garapan Fishing Base and in the Parent Leadership Conference on Feb. 24 to 25, among several activities in store this month.
