Fiesta goes deep for the big game
While people are practicing their best sick-sounding voices that they will use for Monday morning’s Super Bowl XL contest between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks, local party hosts are preparing for their super-sized pigskin celebrations.
Several of the local watering holes are touting the size and numbers of their screens for the big game, but the folks at Fiesta Resort & Spa are planning to challenge their partygoer’s passing potential.
After the teams march into the locker room at halftime, event coordinators will pull unsuspecting quarterbacks from an expected crowd of upwards of 100 people to show their ability to throw a football through a 17”-diameter target from 20 yards away for $300 cash.
“We’re going to pick five people from the crowd, put them on the grass, and let them pass for cold hard cash,” said Fiesta food and beverage assistant director Tom Welch.
While the target is still under construction, Welch said that it will be roughly the size of a professional tight-end. The crowd is expected to follow the lucky five outside to add a little pressure during the toss, but there will be other forms of entertainment as well.
Fiesta even secured the talents of local spinster DJ Rico to keep the fans happy during the commercial breaks, so organizers feel that they have the game plan for success.
The doors to the Hibiscus Hall will open to all at 7:30am on Monday, Feb. 6, and the first 50 fans will receive a free T-shirt for their punctuality. Fiesta even got into the spirit of the event by charging $12.XL per person, and local monsters of the Marianas gridiron will get an added 10-percent discount for wearing their Commonwealth Football League jersey to the party.
There will be an assortment of prizes up for grabs including a flat screen television and several products from Coor’s Light and Pepsi.
While the organizers tout the biggest screen on Saipan, they also boast football’s favorite fare. Welch was not shy in proclaiming that the buffet at the Fiesta will be superior to their competitors
“We have the best food. I know people who paid for the game at (a rival hotel) last year, then left, came here, and paid again because our food was so much better,” he said.
This Monday, party patrons will get their fill of scrambled eggs with green onions and cheese, grilled spam, bacon, pancakes, pancit bihon with seafood, chicken wings, and white rice—and that’s only for the breakfast menu.
When the sun gets a little higher in the sky, Steelers and Seahawks fans will fill up on green salad with market vegetables and dressings, assorted cheeses and cold cuts, bread rolls, and assorted Danish.
In addition to the choices of food, the fans will have their share of drinks as they can opt for the Silver Bullet, Pepsi products, orange, pineapple and guava juice, coffee, and tea.
