2006 IVYBL season to kick off on Feb. 21
The 2006 Island-wide Village Youth Basketball League will make a return to the hard courts this month, with officials targeting a Feb. 21 kick-off date.
Co-coordinator Jonathan Tenorio disclosed yesterday that eight teams have already confirmed their participation in the league.
Leading the cast is defending champion San Antonio, which will now play as the Sixers I. The Sixers II, Garapan Rollers I and II, Matansa Sparks I and II, Chalan Kanoa Saints, and San Vicente will also put their skills to the test in the 14-and-under cage league.
Tenorio said other teams that are interested can still register and must pay the entry fee by the start of the season, with checks made payable to the Division of Sports and Recreation, which organizes the event.
“We’re sticking with the ‘no-pay, no-play rule,’” Tenorio said.
He added that all teams are limited to just 15 players, all of whom must play if present at a game.
“I know a lot of people are concerned about winning, but we’re talking about kids, so lets give all of them the chance to get some experience,” he said.
Co-coordinator Joe Mettao echoed Tenorio’s comments, citing the importance of developing athletes for the future.
“With this rule, no one will be left out. The team will get penalized if a player does not play. We have to work together and try to develop the skills of these players, so when they grow up and move up to the other leagues, they’re prepared.”
The league will feature a round-robin regular season with all teams advancing to the playoffs. The pennant champion and runner-up of the regular season will receive first-round byes in the playoffs
“We’re looking at the league concluding sometime in April,” Tenorio said.
