OPA asked to audit old legislative bureau
Legislative leaders have asked the Office of the Public Auditor to audit the spending by the Legislative Bureau during the 14th Legislature.
Senate President Joseph M. Mendiola and House Speaker Oscar M. Babauta wrote a joint letter to public auditor Michael S. Sablan to request the comprehensive audit of all the funds expended by the Legislative Bureau under the previous administration.
“The audit you will provide will allow the members of this Legislature to better understand the operations of the bureau, so that we may exercise our responsibilities concerning oversight of the bureau granted us by Article II Section 17 of the Constitution,” the leaders said.
“We are well aware that the bureau is to remain free from political pressure. In an attempt to avoid any appearance, however remote, of stealth dealing or political coercion, we ask that you provide copies of any interim and final reports which you issue to us to the director and deputy director of the bureau contemporaneously,” Mendiola and Babauta told Sablan.
The Legislative Bureau provides all required services to the Legislature in connection with duties and responsibilities during sessions and committee meetings. The bureau maintains all records, files, library and other documents of the Legislative Branch.
The LB director is designated by the joint leadership of the Legislature. The bureau has almost 40 staff members including legal personnel, fiscal analyst, sergeants at arms, clerks, and maintenance personnel.
