Gov. Benigno R. Fitial named yesterday a new commissioner to the Department of Public Safety.

Ernest M. Williams was appointed to serve as the acting DPS commissioner, replacing John Wabol of the Fire Division. The appointment became effective yesterday, Feb. 28, 2006.

Williams, said to be a U.S. Army member, is moving from the United States mainland to accept the position with the CNMI government.

He is a son-in-law of former Transition Committee chair Martin Manglona. Manglona recently resigned as chairman of the Covenant Party and declined his appointment as Immigration chief, reportedly due to differences with the administration, particularly on appointment issues.

Press secretary Charles P. Reyes said that the administration is now preparing Williams’ nomination package, which is a requirement for Senate confirmation.

“Mr. Williams has a background in the military and law enforcement. He should be able to help the local force,” Reyes said.

He also said that Wabol, who had been appointed on a temporary basis, would continue to serve at DPS.

“Please extend your full cooperation and support to Mr. Williams, as he establishes himself at the Department of Public Safety and works to enforce our laws. Mr. Williams is highly qualified and the administration has high confidence in his ability to direct the operations of the Department of Public Safety,” Fitial said in his memorandum.
