The Saipan Swim Club has plenty of reasons to celebrate this week as a ton of tankers sent wicked waves in the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool this weekend’s Heptathlon, but none stood out as much as Rezne Wong’s record-setting performance in the 100m Breaststroke.

Wong broke the 1996 record set by Joshua Taitano in his race to the wall and back with an incredible 1:16.65 to get the meet started with a bang, and he continued the day with a slew of top finishes alongside fellow swim stud Juan Camacho.

Wong was also the first to tap the tiles in the 400m mixed (4:54.02), 200m Freestyle (2:20.18), 50m Breaststroke (37.16), and finished second in the 50m Butterfly (31.06), 50m Freestyle (28.51), and 100m Butterfly (1:14:88).

Camacho was the only one who managed to best Wong during the day’s events as the speedy swimmer racked up first place finishes in the 100m Backstroke (1:10.90), 100m Butterfly (1:13.68), 50m Butterfly (31.06), 200m Backstroke (2:36.91), 50m Freestyle (27.75), and second in the 400m Freestyle (5:04.10), 100m Breaststroke (1:27.07), 200m Freestyle (2:31.13).

SSC head coach Michael Stewart said that he was happy with the turnout considering the amount of events taking place around the island, and that the swimmers performed admirably in the Marpi tank.

“I think it went well. It was a relatively small meet because we had to reschedule and there were conflicting events. I was really pleased with the way the kids swam this time of year,” he said.

That is good news for the swim team that looks to perform well in front of the home crowd this summer during the 6th Micronesian Games.
