MGOC calls on canoe enthusiasts, closing date of Games changed
The Micronesian Games Organizing Committee is concerned about the status of canoeing, a sport close to the hearts of islanders, and is in the dark whether to include it or not in the short list of sports for the 6th Micronesian Games.
During a meeting Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, concerns were expressed about the hosting of canoeing during the Games as representatives of the sport have yet to meet with members of the MGOC to express willingness to organize the competition.
With the Games scheduled to take place in less than four months, and no one from canoeing showing up during meetings, MGOC president Michael White has set today—during the monthly Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association meeting—as the final deadline for canoeing to inform NMASA whether they intend to compete as well as organize the sport during the Games.
Members of the MGOC supported White’s deadline, citing that with the Games coming closer and closer, preparations must be underway for all sports.
Meanwhile, the MGOC has decided to change the date of the closing ceremony to July 2 instead of July 3. With all events expected to be complete before the evening of July 2 and one of the biggest challenges being to secure funds for the Games, the committee decided to pull back the day of the closing ceremony.
Opening and closing ceremony committee chair Rose Igitol also disclosed that the opening of the Games would include a helicopter flyover provided by the U.S. Navy, while the closing ceremony will feature fireworks.
Facility committee chair Joe Lizama also disclosed that the torch used during the 1990 Micronesian Games—the last time the quadrennial event was held in the CNMI—is still in good condition and will be used again for the 2006 Games.
Finance committee chairman Rex Palacios, who was instrumental in creating the financial plan that was presented to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial last week, also said he was finalizing a solicitation letter that will be used in requesting financial assistance from private companies.
Palacios explained that he has already been in contact with business representatives who have already confirmed their willingness to support the Games and are ready to make financial contributions.
Funds contributed to the Games must be made payable to the 2006 MGOC. Palacios said a bank account for the Games was to be opened yesterday.
Among the businesses that have confirmed support is Sherwin Williams Paint Store, which according to the MGOC, has committed to providing paint for the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, as well as materials for the renovation of the roof of the facility, which leaks each time it rains. The MGOC will meet again on Tuesday at 6:30pm.
