A marine training company received commendation from the House of Representatives yesterday for providing local residents the opportunity to pursue careers in the maritime industry.

In a unanimous vote, the House members adopted a resolution recognizing Marine Tech International and its manager Jason Shankweiler.

MTI, which operates the Merchant Marine Training and Services & License Center, offers U.S. Coast Guard approved maritime training courses to CNMI and Guam residents who are 18 years and older.

“In the past, maritime jobs were mainly available to outside hiring, and Jason Shankweiler has changed that scenario by training and assisting in the placing of local residents in the maritime industry,” read a portion of House Resolution 15-30, authored by Rep. Stanley Torres.

“[T]he House commends Jason Shankweiler for his untiring efforts to help our local residents secure training and good jobs in the maritime industry,” it added.

Information provided by Torres showed that MTI offers a wide range of marine skills development services. Although the company does not offer placement assistance to students, MTI provides contacts needed in job hunting.

The firm is working as an authorized training center with Houston Marine Training Services, a division of a New Orleans-based company helping applicants prepare for Coast Guard license examinations.

According to MTI, an entry-level position in the U.S. Merchant Marine pays $38,000 a year.
