Two new nominees to the Marianas Visitors Authority board of directors earned the approval of the Senate appointments committee yesterday.

Tan Holdings Corp. president Jerry Tan and DFS Galleria manager Emma Villagomez went through a smooth confirmation hearing at the Senate Chamber.

Sen. Henry San Nicolas, chairman of the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations, said his panel would recommend the confirmation of both appointees when the Upper House meets on Rota on Friday, March 17, 2006.

ÅgThe governor and the lt. governor indeed chose two perfect candidates for the job. It would the Commonwealth’s loss if we did not confirm you,Åh San Nicolas said.

Tan and Villagomez were each given an opportunity to present their qualifications at the hearing.

Then, members of the public were allowed to testify regarding the appointments.

Current MVA board members Marian Aldan Pierce and JM Guerrero expressed their strong support for the confirmation of both appointees.

Pierce alluded to the nominees as Ågindividuals who have the capability, the resources, and the desire to help us steer out of [the tourism industry’s bleak] situation.Åh

She said Villagomez has the qualities and drive needed to get the local tourism industry back on its feet. As for Tan, she said that he is so passionate about the tourism industry and so very committed to its quick recovery that he had sacrificed family time to work for MVA even though he had not been confirmed.

Commonwealth Election Commission executive director Gregorio Sablan and the governor’s special assistant for administration, Esther Fleming, also testified in support of the appointees.
