Little League fund raiser tomorrow
Debates have raged through the years between those who tout the benefits of sports and those who think that time can be better spent elsewhere, but for the past five years a group of children from the CNMI have forged a bridge through baseball that stretches from Tanapag to Taylor, Michigan that is stronger than concrete and steel.
The CNMI Junior League All-Stars have repeatedly shown their strength in the Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament by traveling to the mainland for a record five consecutive years as the representative in the Junior League World Series.
While the names of the players have changed over the years, every time the local kids have touched down in Taylor they have been greeted by their team mom Sue Phillips and welcomed to the community that has become a second home to Saipan sluggers.
When the team of Junior Leaguers went to Taylor last year they offered Phillips an invitation to see the CNMI firsthand. A couple of months ago the Saipan Junior League Parents Association took the offer one step further by planning events intended to raise the funds needed to bring “Aunt Sue” to her second home on Saipan.
In an article written by Dave Gorgon of The News-Herald, Taylor’s hometown paper, “Aunt Sue” will put her fear of flying behind her when she takes her first flight ever from her small town home nearly 8,300 miles away to Saipan.
The first of the fundraisers kicks off this weekend when the players and parents will be selling hot lunches along Beach Road across the street from the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. Each of the meals costs just $5 and comes with the local style food that has become more of a tradition than a regular menu.
