Public market petition drive this Friday
The fishermen and farmers supporting the construction of a permanent facility for a public market at Garapan Fishing Base are again staging a petition drive on Friday, March 24, 2006, at the same site, from 8am to 6pm.
The farmers and fishermen are respectfully soliciting the support and cooperation of the public to stop and sign the petition.
The petition appeals to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and DLNR Secretary Dr. Dela Cruz to reconsider their decision terminating the project at Garapan Fishing Base.
Public Law 13-10 provided $500,000 for the A&E design, construction, and collateral equipment for the proposed project. Saipan Local Law 14-11 provided $500,000 for it. Community Development Block Grant also approved $310,000 for the market.
“Other financial sources for the completion of this very important facility for the people of the Commonwealth are being continuously researched,” the group said.
The construction of a state-of-the-art marina at the north side of the finger will provide the fishermen access to the slips to market their fresh catch. The farmers and fishermen from Tinian and Rota with good size boats will also have access to the marina and the public market.
Saipan, the capital of the Northern Marianas, is the only island nation in the entire Pacific region without a convenient, centralized, public market where people can go to buy fresh vegetables, fruits, fishes, meat, flowers, seedlings, homemade products, and many more. Please help the fishermen and farmers. (PR)
