No Zone puts the cuffs on DPW, P&S wins
No Zone used a balanced attack to turn back upset conscious Department of Public Works, 87-75, Tuesday night in the 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Guard Jerry Ayuyu jumpstarted the defending champions’ campaign, scattering six points in the first quarter as the team went up 19-13.
The Department of Public Safety team continued to dominate DPW in the second, as do-it-all swingman Ed Diaz exploded for 14 points to help No Zone to a 41-32 spread at the half.
DPW mounted a comeback at the start of the second half, as Frank Cabrera strung together seven points and John Guerrero and John Tomokane added four apiece to help DPW trim their deficit, 51-56, heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Former Sixers sharpshooter John Sablan and Carl Hocog, however, put a stop to DPW’s hopes of pulling a come-from-behind victory, as the duo combined to score 12 of No Zone’s 19 fourth quarter points to help the team to the 11-point victory.
Diaz led DPS scorers with 20 points, while older brother John, Ayuyu, and Sablan added 10 points each. The win allowed No Zone to climb up the standings with an 8-3 record.
Cabrera matched Diaz’s 20 points to pace DPW, which dropped to 1-9.
In the curtain raiser, league-leading scorer Edgar Pangelinan scored 50 points and led Procurement & Supply to an 80-72 win over cellar dweller Customs Inspectors.
The win was just the second in 12 games for P&S. Ray Lizama paced 0-10 Customs with 18 points.
