Drag racing facility gets House backing

Drag racing, a sport that is currently illegal on Saipan, has found an ally in the House of Representatives.

Drag racing, a sport that is currently illegal on Saipan, has found an ally in the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers adopted on Wednesday a resolution urging the Department of Public Lands to designate a parcel of public land to the Marianas Auto-Motor for the construction of a drag racing facility.

MASA is an association of car and racing enthusiasts that coordinates most of the automotive sporting events and activities in the Commonwealth.

Authored by Rep. Martin Ada, House Resolution 15-36 notes that drag racing is a popular sports activity in the Commonwealth. However, the islands do not have the facility or designated area where enthusiasts could pursue the sport.

“The designation of public land to MASA for the purpose of constructing a drag racing facility would provide a venue where interested persons can develop or advance their skills in drag racing in a safe and controlled environment,” the resolution states.
