Rangers blank Brewers, 5-0
The Ford Rangers shifted into high gear on Saturday afternoon as the defending champions of the Saipan Major League blanked the Toyota Brewers, 5-0, in front of a crowd of family and friends at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
Pitcher Roy Celis returned to his rocket-like self atop the mound as he shut out his former team and allowed three hits through seven innings while fanning four would-be hitters to pick up the win for the Silver and Black before J.P. Sablan picked up the save with a pair of shutout innings.
Sablan also drove in the eventual game-winning run in the top of the third when he singled in Frances George, but he wasn’t the only Ranger hitting the ball around the park as first baseman Ed Kapileo went 2-for-4 on the day with a single and a triple on an afternoon when hits came at a premium.
Catcher Craig Sanchez got out of the squats to smack a single and score a run while George did the same. Power-hitting third baseman Pete Tomokane managed only one connection when he smacked a single and crossed the plate, but that was more than most of the batters could fare on Saipan’s biggest baseball stage.
The Rangers scored all the runs that they would need in when they tallied a pair of plate crossings in the top of the first inning and added another in the third, while Celis shut down the Brewers before they had a chance to get on the board.
The Rangers added another pair of insurance runs late in the game when Kapileo and Sanchez made it home in the seventh, and Sablan maintained Celis’ win with a pair of strong innings to end the game.
