The power of forgiveness

In July of 1945, my father was in the Army, training for the invasion of Japan. This weekend, more than 60 years later, my scout troop was privileged to join with scouts from Fuji, Japan in a peace dedication at Suicide Cliff. What a wonderful example of the power of forgiveness! Thinking back on what happened at those cliffs, all those people filled with despair and hopelessness, thinking that death was preferable to being captured by the Americans. Could any of them have imagined that Japanese and American scouts would sit side by side on those very cliffs in a ceremony of peace to those whose lives were lost there?
