Ninety 6th graders from the William S. Reyes Elementary School gathered Thursday for a one-day health seminar on HIV prevention.

The HIV presentation was held at the Seaside Hall of Saipan Grand Hotel in Susupe.

WSR Elementary School vice principal Lynette Villagomez said the presentation—which taught and disseminated information on such a delicate subject as sex and HIV to elementary level students—was a first in the CNMI.

Villagomez said that, as far as she knows, the Public School System does not teach sex education in the elementary level. Through the one-day lecture, however, she said the participants will be equipped with knowledge and information on how to make wise decisions in the future.

She added that the seminar talked about sexuality, sexual behavior, peer pressures, drugs and the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV.

The vice-principal said they held the event because most of the time parents refuse to discuss the topic with their children.

The main speaker for the event was Laura Jean Tenorio-Fejeran. She presented topics on teen dating, healthy versus unhealthy relationship, signs of unhealthy relationships, sexual behavior and others.

In the afternoon, the sixth graders were divided into groups to further discuss the significance of the things that they had learned.

WSR principal Alfred Ada opened the event while school counselor Becky Flores ended the workshop with a reminder to the students of their responsibilities as productive citizens of the CNMI.
