While the islands are bracing for the most extreme event to rock the CNMI since the XTERRA Saipan Championship kicked off last year’s Saipan Sportsfest, another group of athletes are preparing to get their kicks this weekend as the Northern Mariana Islands Football (Soccer) Association ready for the first round of women’s action.

According to coordinator Brenda Schultz, women’s soccer is up and running, and all interested women are welcome to join the ladies bend it like Beckham on the field tomorrow night at 5pm. For those unable to make it for tomorrow evening’s session, the women will also be getting a leg up this weekend on Saturday, April 1, at 3pm.

The official registration will be Saturday at 3pm at the AMP, and since organizers understand that some women will be recovering from the rigors of XTERRA, they are keeping the window open to try arrange an alternative time to sign up.

Schultz said that there are enough players in the loop for four complete teams but they would like to have more. To register for the upcoming women’s league, interested players can reach Schultz via email at brendaschultz70@yahoo.com.

“It’s fine if you have never played before. There are many women out who have never played, and we are doing a training program to teach the game. It’s a great way to stay in shape and cross train for triathlon,” she said.

The ladies are not only looking for players, as the league also requires the guidance of some experienced coaches. In addition to participants and their mentors, the women’s league is also looking for team sponsors. The cost to sponsor a team is $300, and pays off with the sponsor’s name on the back of the uniforms as well as incorporated in the team names. Schultz may also be contacted for more information about sponsoring a team.
