Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and the presiding officers of the Legislature will leave on an official trip to Taiwan next week.

Fitial announced Friday that the Taiwanese government would cover the expenses during his April 12 trip with Senate President Joseph Mendiola and House Speaker Oscar M. Babauta.

The three CNMI officials will meet business and tourism representatives in Taiwan.

This is the governor’s third official, off-island trip since he took office in January 2006. His first two trips were for Japan and the Philippines.

Fitial used personal funds to pay for both travels.

The House of Representatives recently adopted a resolution supporting Taiwan’s bid to participate as an observer in the 59th annual meeting of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland in May.

House Resolution 15-41, authored by Speaker Babauta, endorses Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly, the supreme policy-making body of the World Health Organization.

The resolution noted that the World Health Assembly has allowed other nonmembers to its meetings such as the Palestinian Liberation Organization in 1974, as well as the Order of Malta and the Holy See in the early 1950s. Thus, there is no reason why Taiwan should not be allowed to participate as an observer.

The United States adheres to the one-China policy that recognizes the Beijing-based government as the legitimate ruler of China.

China objects to any inclusion of Taiwan in international gatherings.
